Using the treatment of depression as an example, this talk will reflect on the place of psychoanalysis in 21st century psychiatry, in the wake of the psychopharmacological revolution that so dominated late 20th century psychiatry. What will the psychiatry of the 21st century look like, in light of the massive disappointment in SSRIs, and what will the relative roles of psychoanalysis and psychopharmacology now be?
