Psychotherapy Research & Clinical Practice:
Let’s Create a Dialogue

Dr. Barber will address: How we study the efficacy of psychotherapy with a focus on dynamic therapy?
Dr. Barber will especially focus on the evidence available regarding dynamic therapy for depression. He will then describe a large randomized clinical trial (RCT) that he has conducted examining the efficacy of Supportive-Expressive Therapy, a form of Short-Term Dynamic Therapy in comparison to SSRI and Placebo (Barber, JP, Barrett MS, Gallop R, Rynn MA, Rickels K (2012). Short-term dynamic psychotherapy versus pharmacotherapy for major depressive disorder: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial. The Journal Of Clinical Psychiatry 73 (1): 66-73). After examining some implications of the results of this study and other RCTs, he will end by suggesting how to perhaps integrate psychotherapy research with clinical practice with the hope of engaging the audience in this process and eliciting feedback.
