A New Comprehensive 4-Year Program in Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy (September 2012)

The Stephen Mitchell Center for
Relational Studies
announces
A NEW COMPREHENSIVE FOUR-YEAR PROGRAM
IN RELATIONAL PSYCHOANALYSIS & PSYCHOTHERAPY
September 2012

Over the past 30 years we have seen an evolutionary shift in the basic
assumptions underlying the practice of dynamic psychotherapy and
psychoanalysis. Where once the patient’s unconscious process was the
exclusive focus of psychoanalytic work, contemporary practitioners
have shifted their attention to include an appreciation of the complex
relational context within which personal subjectivity develops. This
expansion dramatically shifts our understanding of psychic structure
and unconscious dynamic processes. We now regard the mutative
dimension of the clinical process to rest upon the multiplicity of
personal meanings which grow out of the intersubjective engagement
between patient and analyst.

Relational analysis emerged within a matrix of object relations, self
psychology, interpersonal analysis, attachment and intersubjectivity
theory. As the only exclusively Relational Training Program in the New
York City Metropolitan area, this program will address both the
history and clinical process of relational analysis as well as
consider the rich contributions of other contemporary theories. Our
excellent faculty (listed below) includes many of the major authors
and teachers of the relational perspective.

We will be accepting applications until June 30th. Please visit our website for further information, curriculum and training requirements

This event is Co-sponsored by:
The NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and

Guest Speaker:
Sue Grand, Ph.D.,author of The Hero in the Mirror: From Fear to Fortitude and The Reproduction of Evil: A Clinical and Cultural Perspective

Discussants:
Lewis Aron, Ph.D., ABPP & Jeff Wells, M.Div.

Dr. Grand’s fascinating paper presents her work with a migrant worker who struggles out of poverty to become a physician and caretaker. Unknown to himself as a human subject, his life is a devotion to the needy other. His own health is compromised and his sacrificial practices draw him close to near-death. Analysis of his masochism fails. To save his life, the dyad must examine his Christian convictions of passion, devotion, and sacrifice. These values collide with the analyst’s philosophical/metaphysical system, derived from relational analytic theory, her own reform Jewish ethos, and atheistic beliefs. Can patient and analyst meet – and save his life?

Please join Dr. Grand, her discussants, and many colleagues as we explore this compelling intersection of psychoanalysis, religion, and social justice in the consulting room.

IPTAR Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program The Child Therapist at Work (April 16th, 2012)

IPTAR Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program

is pleased to invite you to attend a meeting of our Series:

The Child Therapist at Work

I Didn’t Destroy You, We Have Survived: A young girl’s revelations about psychotherapy, and lessons for her therapist

By Cecile de Lardemelle, Psy.D.

Anisha, a nine-year-old, was originally referred for treatment by the school for her attention-seeking and disruptive behavior, as well as for her problems with authority and learning. Anisha initially presented with a fragmented environment, a tenuous sense of attachment, and pain and rage about her place in the family. After two years of twice-weekly psychotherapy in a school setting, a greater sense of security within the treatment relationship led to the emergence of Anisha’s more positive sense of self, which in turn began to serve as the foundation for greater object-relatedness.

The presentation will highlight how attachment developed through the survival of the relationship between the therapist and the patient, paving the way to a greater capacity for emotional growth and significantly improved functioning in all areas of her life. Therapeutic interventions will be discussed in response to the patient’s needs, as they emerged in the play material, and in the transference and counter-transference.

Susan S.Berger, Psy.D., Co-Director of IPTAR’s Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Program, who supervised Dr. De Lardemelle’s work, will comment briefly on both treatment and the supervisory process.

Cecile De Lardemelle, Psy.D., is an advanced candidate in IPTAR’s Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Program. She has been working in IPTAR’s on-site school program for the past three years.

Elisabeth Young-Bruehl demonstrates ‘100 Years of Psychoanalysis a Timeline: 1900-2000

The timeline presents the history of psychoanalysis decade by decade, from 1900 to 2000, indicating major figures, events, books, and schools of theory and practice. You can see on one long page, made up of ten panels, everything you need to guide you in seeing this complex history as a whole.

On the reverse of the timeline, you will find a brief introduction to its arrangement and a series of nineteen paragraphs, each containing a brief history of some aspect of psychoanalysis – from its clinical settings to its present intersection with neuroscience.

The timeline is printed on high quality, heavy paper and folds up to fit into a sleeve that makes it like a book you can put on a bookshelf or on the coffee table. But the timeline itself can also be put on a wall, as it is or mounted.

Jung on Film

This compelling film represents a rare record of an original genius. In Jung on Film, the pioneering psychologist tells us about his collaboration with Sigmund Freud, about the insights he gained from listening to his patients’ dreams, and about the fascinating turns his own life has taken. Dr. Richard I. Evans, a Presidential Medal of Freedom nominee, interviews Jung, giving us a unique understanding of Jung’s many complex theories, while depicting Jung as a sensitive and highly personable human being.

The 2nd  day of the conference will focus on clinical work.  There will be several case presentations through which we will explore how these issues take shape in the analytic encounter.  We will compare traditional and culturally-informed interventions and study their therapeutic action.
